C-Minus
C-Minus
C-Minus experienced his first gig at the Virginia Avenue Elementary dance on the eve of his thirteenth birthday. (It was on that night, that he realized exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life). Who would have ever thought that “moving the crowd” at all of those high school weekend parties & weekday “ditching parties” would not only become his “day job” but would create a love that would take him all over the globe.
C- kicked off his local career on the turntables right after that dynamic preteen school dance anointing. He would go on to rock parties and functions locally and would soon team up with future Fantastik 4our representative and fellow Bakersfield resident Mr. Choc. Together, the newly formed DJ duo of C- and Mr. Choc bubbled and due to their successful local campaign, they eventually were asked to replace, The Baka Boyz at KKXX once they left to take positions at Power 106 from KKXX PD Steve Wall.
The move to on air mixing at their local KKXX eventually landed the duo a coveted spot on LA’s own, powerhouse radio station, Power 106. C-Minus and Choc took over the closing hour of The Baka Boyz popular, “Friday Nite Flavaz” show and then broadened their crew, bringing in Fuzzy (Fantabulous) and DJ E-Man becoming the “Radio Hit Squad”. Another crew shift happened and with the additions of J.Rocc (of the World Famous Beat Junkies) and Truly OdD (of the Heavyweights), the Fantastik 4our was born! Mr. Choc, C-Minus, J.Rocc & Truly OdD as the Fantastik 4our held down Friday Night Flavas from 1998 until its end in 2006 .
C-Minus’s radio show “Channel Zero” with hosts DJ Lethal of House of Pain/Limp Bizkit fame and DJ Homicide from Sugar Ray, was one of the first of its kind on popular urban driven radio. The playlists and mixes were phenomenal and they all brought quality DJing and knowledge of many genres of music to the forefront of the show. The show featured a who’s who of popular guests and hosts featuring everyone from Pharrell Williams to the iconic DJ AM .
Always showing exceptional prowess with mixing nontraditional rock and metal selections with hip hop break beats and songs ; C-Minus’s rock vs. hip hop style of mixing became a trademark as he was one of the first to contribute this style to the culture and is undoubtedly one of the best at its execution ..Through his dedication to the movement he has teamed up with and contributed to the works of a myriad of artists and icons representing the Hip Hop, Rock , and Jazz genres respectively …. In 1998, he was asked by members of Korn to join them on the Family Values tour , he has been spinning around the globe ever since . C- has provided deejay and tour support for everyone from Queens of the Stone Age to Herbie Hancock . In 02 , Dave Grohl personally requested he open the shows for the Foo-Fighters tour. He’s shared the stage with Wu-Tang Clan, Metallica, Nas, Deftones, Kanye West, Rage Against the Machine, Busta Rhymes, Weezer, Gang Starr, Blink 182, N*E*R*D, Motorhead, La Coka Nostra, Green Day, Tenacious D, Black Star, Kid Rock, Kelis, EPMD, The Strokes, The Roots, Lexicon, Eagles of Death Metal, Pete Yorn, My Morning Jacket, P.O.D., System of A Down, Biffy Clyro, Kaiser Chiefs, The Subways, etc. In 2008, Herbie Hancock requested he join his band for a small tour, which included headlining the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. He has remixed songs for Johnny Cash, Korn, Queens of The Stone Age and Minus the Bear. Rivas provided the drum programming on "Ataraxia" by Team Sleep featuring Chino Moreno and DJ Crook on their self-titled debut album and most recently provided cuts on "Insane", A Different World", and "Next in Line" on Korns’ highly anticipated and heavily celebrated album “The Serenity of Suffering”. Rivas is currently the DJ for We Don’t Smoke the Same and is currently in the lab working on new music with the collective .
Throughout his radio career C-Minus has interviewed the likes of, Chuck D (Public Enemy), Jay Z, Janet Jackson, Dilated Peoples, Suicidal Tendencies, The Neptunes, Queens of the Stone Age, Cypress Hill, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Mix Master Mike, Papa Roach, and Jurassic 5. C-Minus was asked to Executive Produce and provide Music Supervision on the official soundtrack for the documentary about skate culture icon, Christian Hosoi (Rising Sun ) …He facilitated key musical collaborations and was also featured on some of the tracks which included original songs and remixes from Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age, Brant Bjork, Lexicon, Murs, MadVillan (Madlib & MF Doom), Waajeed & Invinsible, The Gossip and more . In 2014 , he Joined Mass Mental with Robert Trujillo, Armand Sabal-Lecco, Brooks Wackerman and they worked collectively on the score for the Oscar nominated animated short "Pear Cider & Cigarettes" from director Robert Valley.
Since 2010 , C-Minus has been cohosting and providing iconic mixes on Dr. Greenthumb as well as The Medication Show, both on BrealTV www.brealtv.com. In 2013 he started C-Minus’s Late Night Rock Mix which can be heard Saturdays 11 PM PST on BRealTV/Dash Radio.
