The Tijuana Panthers got their name from the little black ceramic panther that was a present from their neighbor Max Baker—yes, the Max Baker who they named their first album after, and who deserves a bio all his own—and they got their sound from that strange place where punk bands crash into pop music and come out the other side, bristling with hooks and hitting three-part harmonies almost by happy accident.
Even the Beach Boys were once a garage band, and after them came the waves of kids playing rock 'n' roll somewhere between the surf and the surface streets. Then when punk showed up in the '70s, it was just an adjustment in hairstyle and speed. The Buzzcocks did this a whole hemisphere away, the Real Kids and the Modern Lovers did it on the other side of the country, and the Crowd and the Simpletones did it just a few towns over. And now Tijuana Panthers come striding proudly out of their hometown of Long Beach, California.
Since 2012 the Hurricanes have been Smashing Bars, Destroying House Parties, and "Fucking Shit Up" at Venues and Festivals. What was supposed to be a pass time music project to show their High School teachers that they weren't your typical Santa Ana, CA street vandals, quickly turned into a powerful musical journey.
They quickly won their 1st performance, which was a Battle of the Bands, which is when they earned the name and title, The Hurricanes. A force not to be reckon with.
Quickly they shared the stage with legends, Barbara Lynn, Big Jay McKneely, Ronnie Spector, Willie G, and many more.
With influences such as the Doors, Howling Wolf and their love for Chicano & Immigrant Culture, it's no surprise they are out there to change the world with their Loud, Raw Rock N Roll/RnB music and positive beliefs. Unity and Diversity, Paz, Amor y Musica.
Hurricanes are an exciting band to witness live! Just when you thought music was really over, as Jim M. would have said. A long comes the Hurricanes, with phrases such as "Let's Fuck Shit Up" & "Brown & Down". They really are the live experience you won't forget. After all they call their style of music "MAXIMUM CHICANO R&B".
