August Residency: Automatic

Mon July 29, 2019 Ted Davis

Join us every Monday night in August for Los Angeles post-punk band Automatic’s Echo residency!

Automatic have released just two singles and an elusive EP but they are already one of the most beloved and lauded bands in recent Los Angeles memory. With an alluringly minimal catalog, it’s n0t hard to see why the group is opening for acclaimed artists like Poptone and Surfbort and are already signed to Eastside stalwarts Stones Throw Records.

The trio of female vocalists, comprised of synth mastermind Izzy Glaudini, bassist Halle Saxon Gaines, and drummer Lola Dompe, makes a lot of noise for such a small outfit. Like fellow sharp toothed rockers Wax Chattels and Prettiest Eyes, Automatic eschew guitars in favor of keyboard generated melodies and prominent rhythms. The result is cutting, propulsive, and wonderfully unnerving.

Automatic are at once familiar and innovative. They are a proudly influenced band and are only better for it. Motorik rhythms evoke kraut rock legends like Can and Neu! as well as Gang Of Four and Television. Sun faded keys sound like Suicide, were the ’70s New York avant pioneers to have formed during the surf rock revival of early 2010s California. Endearing but menacing vocals bring to mind contemporary noise pop staples such as The Vivian Girls, Colleen Green (opening on the final night of their residency), and The Dum Dum Girls. Though the music that has affected Automatic isn’t hard to pinpoint, their peers are some of the most eclectic artists of the past few years. It won’t be long until Automatic are playing alongside rising underground stars such as Crack Cloud and Sneaks.

Come to the first night of Automatic’s August Echo residency Monday, August 5th to hear some genuinely great tunes and grab a copy of their 7″.

August 5: Automatic with Future Shoxx, Flat Worms, and DJ Joo Joo of Froth

August 12: Automatic with Egrets on Ergot, C57BL/6, Terminal A, and a DJ set from POW!

August 19: Automatic with Adult Books, Gold Cage, Body Double, and DJ John Roller from MONO RECORDS

August 26: Automatic with Colleen Green, Diva Dompe, Girl Friday, and DJs InkaRose and Brittany Bueno
