Art student Jessica Ramsey and island-raised Andrew Martin’s collaboration began in a small horse stable home in the back swamps of Louisiana in 2013. Within two weeks of meeting, the two declared each other “musical soul mates,” and Moon Honey was born. Their vigorous work ethic and unorthodox approach to songwriting culminated in the critically acclaimed debut album Hand-Painted Dream Photographs, mixed by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. The unlikely collision of Bjork-esque melodies with late 60’s inspired, freak-out guitar riffs landed the band in The New York Times, NOISEY, and NPR, launching a number of cross country tour performances including an in-studio KEXP session and official SXSW showcases featured on NPR’s Top 100 Acts.
After garnering a vigilant west coast following, the pair relocated from Baton Rouge to Los Angeles in 2015. In a short period of time, the group released the single “Boy Magic” dubbed “Splendid prog-pop” by Amoeba Records, playing L.A. venues such as The Echo and Bootleg Theater with shows presented by L.A. Weekly and BuzzbandsLA. Inspired by their current tropical terrain and the outlandish culture surrounding the project, the band has just recorded a new album helmed by John Goodmanson (Blonde Redhead, Sleater Kinney, Death Cab) to be released in 2017.
Like all great bands, DRÆMINGS began as an outlet for heartbreak – the opening track of their debut EP, Nevada, repeatedly pleads “oh stay with me / please stay with me” – and has spent the last several years evolving from vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and sometimes-producer Kimi Recor’s alter ego into a tightly knit band of four whose new EP explores the many ways you can find your voice and mine your own inner strength. This drastic change in theme reflects not only the similarly drastic changes in the world as a whole, but also this movement away from a single spotlight and toward a group effort.
Their self-titled 2017 EP is akin to a rebirth for DRÆMINGS and brings Recor back to her band-oriented roots, cementing DRÆMINGS as a four piece comprised of herself (vocals/guitar), Thorson (bass/synth), Christopher Vick (guitar), and Nathaniel Meek (drums). The band returned to being independent (the EP will be released on Recor’s own PLAG Records) and wrote DRÆMINGS as a collective, self-titling the EP to make that point clear to listeners. Thorson stepped forward to helm the production and mixing of all six tracks in his Underwater Studios. From the heavy, thrumming bassline in “Fire in Hell,” to the dancefloor-worthy “Great Escape,” to the crooning Enya-esque EP closer, “Tides,” there really is something for everyone on DRÆMINGS, all without losing the band’s trademark sound that ties it all together.
Cellars is an 80s-influnced, synth/pop project founded in 2013 by Allene Norton. Growing up, Allene was always attracted to anything musical and she began playing piano and guitar at the ages of 8 and 12. After a high school phase of writing songs on acoustic guitar and performing in coffee shops, she attended school for audio engineering. After taking classes in synthesis and remixing, she began experimenting with home recording of synth-based pop music which eventually grew into the songs of Cellars. Not only does Allene write and arrange the songs, she is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and engineers and mixes her recordings. Cellars was founded after a move to Los Angeles in 2013 in order to bring her home recordings to the stage with ex-guitarist Riley Walker. Since then, Cellars' live set has taken on many iterations ranging from solo sets to a full backing band. Influenced heavily by the music of the late 1970s and 1980s, Cellars' music harkens to the age of early digital experimentation with a modern twist. Madonna, Prince, Human League, Depeche Mode, Yaz, Debbie Deb (among other 80s latin freestyle) New Order, and YMO are all early influences.
Alina is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer making progressive pop music in Los Angeles. In live performances over the past year, Alina and her band combine the sophistication of acts like Bjork and St. Vincent with the raw power of artists like Kate Bush and Fiona Apple. Alina’s background in dance contributes to a live show that transcends the expected.
She recently released a group of singles, a preview of her forthcoming album, on New Professor Music. Collaborating with producer and composer Theo Karon (Robert Gomez, Cross Record, Idlewild, Liphemra), she has vastly expanded the scope and ambition of her work, drawing new influence from experimental synthesis, electronics, and the classical avant-garde. As her lyrics explore and challenge the darkness within and without, startling and complex textures drawn from acoustic instruments mesh seamlessly with experiments in timbre and tone to form a body of work that is both direct and intricate.
Grimy Goods hailed her recent residency at The Bootleg Theater as a performance that "permanently raised the bar for all bar performances in the city of Los Angeles" and stated that she has the "rare potential to become one of this city’s landmark artists before the end of the decade." She was also listed as one of 20 Bands to Watch in 2017 by Buzzbands.la.
The Entrance Band (DJ Set)
The name, The Entrance Band, can conjure images of secret entryways, or it can represent the feeling of being dazzled and delighted – quite literally, to be put into a trance. The music made by The Entrance Band can awaken either definition, and countless other dimensions as well.
Since first collaborating together on the 2006 album Prayer of Death, guitarist/vocalist Guy Blakeslee, bassist Paz Lenchantin and drummer Derek James have breathed continued life into the sound of The Entrance Band. That energy has translated into a catalog of recorded expression and an unassailable reputation for offering one of the most intuitively-interconnected live performances on the planet.
These memorable melodies and their near-telekinetic musical kinship are found in full flower on Face the Sun – certainly the band’s most compelling collection of songs to date. Their first full-length in four years, it is an album built firmly upon notable transformations experienced by all three band members.
