Khemmis is a doomed heavy metal band from Denver, Colorado.
Their debut, ‘Absolution’, was released by 20 Buck Spin in July 2015 and slowly but surely steamrolled all that came in contact with its unforgettable heaviness and classic melodicism. Virtually unknown outside Denver upon release, the band gathered acclaim over the ensuing months and by year end had landed in the #9 spot on Decibel Magazine’s annual top 40 albums of the year, not a small accomplishment for a band on its debut album.
The new album ‘Hunted’ reveals a Khemmis fortified in its purpose and vision, forging an unrivaled synthesis between immense Doom riffs and Maiden-esque harmony. Overall song length has increased yielding more expansively arranged and dramatic storms of elegance and melancholy.
And yet Khemmis are not content to plod through a sea of tears, they are always a rock band first, in service to the movement of the song, even approaching a High On Fire like pace to open the pummeling "Three Gates." The lauded singing of vocalist Phil Pendergast reaches ascendant new heights on tracks like "Candlelight" and "Beyond The Door," while the tasteful use of harsh vocals remains, providing a dark foreboding contrast. The 13-minute title track once again closes the album with an epic stunner.
Undoubtedly ‘Hunted’ is an album that will solidify Khemmis’ place at the vanguard of doom’s most notable modern manifestations, in large part because they transcend the label itself. They’ve seamlessly blended their influences into an extraordinarily listenable album worthy of countless spins. With such a glut of music released today, ‘Hunted’ stands apart, rewarding repeat listens with songs seared straight into the heart.
L.A.'s FUTURE USSES deliver an astounding instrumental record of devastatingly heavy, oppresively slow, yet shimmery and lush sludge-paced rock, run through a filter of nightmarish psychedelia.
It's hard to believe that „The Existential Haunting“ is really a debut album... the Three-piece's sound comes across too shrewd, too canny and too sophisticated. But while FUTURE USSES have really only played a handful of shows in their short career, main songwriter Sacha Dunable has been a member of INTRONAUT for almost 15 years, and dabbled with various doom metal projects over the years, like BEREFT
(LA). FUTURE USSES takes small elements of what those bands do and magnifies them, combining the slow-motion crushing power of doom with the atmosphere and dense harmonic tendencies of INTRONAUT.
Drums and guitar were recorded at Clearlake Audio with Josh Newell (INTRONAUT, CYNIC), Derek Donley (INTRONAUT, BEREFT) and bass with Jon Nunez (TORCHE), all in Los Angeles. Mixing was done by CONVERGE'S Kurt Ballou at God City Studio.
FUTURE USSES lavish guitar sound is built around live guitar loops, „which presents a whole set of limitations but also virtually endless opportunities“, Sacha Dunable comments. „The beautiful thing about making an instrumental record is that you're not obligated to impose any specific literal message onto the listener, but rather to concentrate on setting a vibe that can be interpreted or personified naturally through the power of their own
FUTURE USSES will be playing a number of West Coast shows this spring with bands like DEAD MEADOW, WHORES, SUMAC and HELMS ALEE, and a European tour is in the making for the fall of 2018.
HIGH PRIESTESS is a heavy psych doom trio from Los Angeles throwing down lush harmonies and psychedelic crushing riffs and grooves. Consisting of Katie Gilchrest on guitar and vocals, Mariana Fiel on bass and vocals, and Megan Mullins on drums, they have created a sound that echoes both past and future incarnations of doom and psychedelia.
High Priestess was formed in the spring of 2016 when Mariana Fiel placed an ad on Craigslist seeking like minds for a devastating project. Luckily Katie and Megan heeded the call, and they immediately started producing long, hypnotic jams that morphed into crafted songs with dynamic crescendos and soaring improv sections.
The band self-released a five-song demo in July 2017 that through sheer word-of-mouth gained high critical praise and a growing fanbase. Recently signing with Ripple Music, the demo will enjoy a full release as the bands self-titled first album in Spring of 2018. Tours, both domestic and abroad, will abound to spread the gospel of thick fuzz and rhapsodic melody. Basically, wherever this band can go, they will go. Prepare to worship at their altar.
