This event is 18 and over
This year marks the 10th Annual installment of My Bloody Valentine Nite at Part Time Punks...!! In case you haven't ever been, here's the deal. Every year Michael asks 3 bands he loves (and who love MBV) to put together at least TWO MBV covers to include somewhere in their set. A lotta times bands will play 3, 4, 5 or more covers (because, hey, when the hell else are they gonna get this opportunity??). And in-between sets, yer host spins loads of MBV, Kevin Shields' produced projects, collaborations and of course the host of MBV-inspired bands from 1989-present. AND also, be forewarned, this ALWAYS sells out, so get yer tix NOW!
Part Time Punks
On their debut LP "Mirror", BALMS chose to submerge their airy, dream rock sound into the depths of the soul, embarking on an internal excavation of the darkest area that exists within us all - the Shadow Self. Through years of sonic exploration, conjuring melodies from meditative, repetitive improvisation, the band manifests songs that break through the standard rock format and reach for a more profound level of musical communication. The result is a journey of self-discovery - 11 songs that each offer a place of sanctuary and healing. Recorded by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, King Woman, Bosse-De-Nage) to create the environment - the raw, live-to-tape experience of the music - and mixed with precision by Justin Gerrish (Brand New, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes), "Mirror" is a nightmarish yet cathartic space for the listener to confront and forgive their own darkness, and out of this experience, to grow.
Channeling the pummeling heat of Texas into slow, dreamy textures, Grivo strike a chord that strikes true for fans of Catherine Wheel, Alcest, Lycia, and those continually searching for fresh waves of mournful atmosphere. The three piece band consists of brothers and lifelong musical partners Timothy and Matthew Heck (vocals/guitar and drums, respectfully) and bassist Ricardo Tejeda, and it’s impressive to consider that such a warm, full spectrum can be achieved by three musicians, a true testament to Grivo’s sonic mastery. Elude consists of nine burning embers, each track chock full of powerful low end and carefully calculated guitars. The album was recorded and produced by Robert Williams and mastered by Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv) and will be available on both limited edition LP and cassette on the amazing Holodeck label.
With enchanting dream goth/ shoegaze tracks, Brass Box take listeners on a journey through life, death and the darkness that swells beneath the surface. Duo, Ammo Bankoff and Neil Popkin originally met several years prior at an underground new wave/ goth party in Los Angeles. The bands in which Bankoff played (Tête, Black Flamingo) occasionally shared bills with Popkin’s bands (War Tapes, Rituals). Due to their musical connection both musicians naturally collaborated. Popkin then brought in guitarist Matt Bennett (War Tapes) and drummer Pablo Amador (Rituals), to round out the heavy sounds of Brass Box. Since joining forces the quartet has assembled lush compositions of melody and noise while recording in their Downtown Los Angeles home studio. Some describe the sound as a mix between My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins, but you can decide for yourself.
Los Angeles based three-piece outfit consisting of singer/bassist Monica Gamboa-Katz, singer/guitarist Cole Devine and Sage Ross/drums The band combines their artistic sensibilities to foster a dark ethereal, sonically-mature slow-core trio. Offering smooth-driving bass tempos, with catchy guitar loops and riffs. Gold Cage is sure to warm your heart with fog, and clouds.
