Kokoko!’s July release of their debut album Fongola saw them combine traditional African sounds with more familiar indie-punk palettes. The result sounds like an urgent and unpredictable amalgamation of black midi, UK free jazz revivalists Sons Of Kemet, and Sung Tongs-era Animal Collective. Kokoko! work with handmade instruments crafted from recycled materials, leading to a somehow even more wonderfully unfamiliar sound.
Though their record is a compelling sonic journey, the yellow poncho clad quintet is best experienced live. Check out Fongola below after you get your tickets here to see Kokoko! October 8th at The Echo!
